Raku at Carolina Creations by Barbara Harnack
These creative raku sculptural pieces by Barbara Harnack are half round slabs of clay that are decorated with underglazes and fired. As a girl. Barbara studied under puppet maker, Madame Sorrell which began her lifelong fascination with the study of character.

Other artists that influenced her work are Mark Chagall, Beatrice Wood, William Steig, antique toys and folk art.

These inspirations helps her to create unique sculptures that capture the universal nature of human character. Raku, loosely translated to 'spontaneous dance' is a traditional Japanese ceramic technique dating back to the 16th century. In the technique Harnack employs, American Raku, the ceramic is pulled red hot from the kiln, placed in a trough and covered with straw.
