Edward F Smallwood House New Bern NC
Print from Jan Francoeurs watercolor painting. The Dr. Edward F. Smallwood House, 501 Craven St., was by Edwards father Eli between 1841 and 1845. It is said that Eli built the house for his son to lure him back to New Bern. Dr. Edward Smallwood was a physician trained in New York City and while he was there, he had married a woman from New York. After he returned to New Bern, he practiced medicine in a small office beside the house until his death in the 1880s The house remained in the Smallwood family until the 1930s. The house was used as a hospital for Union troops during the Civil War and was known as the Stanley General Hospital.
